Mary Josephine Hammel, affectionately known as Mary Jo or Jo to her friends and family, was born in the heart of Chicago, IL on March 19, 1949. Mary was a beacon of compassion and creativity, a loving soul who left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing her. She passed away peacefully in her home in Mesa, Arizona, where she resided for thirteen years, on August 24, 2026.
Mary was an inspiring figure, known for her vibrant spirit and remarkable talent as a Reiki Master and spiritual worker. She also excelled at being a fiber artist. She was a master of her craft, creating exquisite clothes, wall hangings, and quilts that spoke volumes of her creative ingenuity. The highlight of her week was often a trip to the fabric store, particularly Mulqueen Sewing and Fabric Centers. This passion for her craft was only rivaled by the love she had for her family and friends, who were the cornerstone of her life. In the words of Pablo Picasso, "The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away," Mary gave her gift freely and generously to all those around her.
Mary is survived by her loving husband, David Hammel, whom she married on January 31, 1982. She is also survived by her daughter, Johannah ( née Burnidge) Martin, her son-in-law, Scott Martin, her grandchildren, Craig Martin and Leslie (née Martin) Pursley, her grandson-in-law, Danny Pursley, her sister, Carol (née Bina) Luurs, her brother-in-law, Jim Luurs, and her niece and nephews, Karen (née Bina) Vandoren, James Bina, and Patrick Luurs. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, James J. and Mary (née Sullivan) Bina, and her brother, James E. Bina.
We invite those who knew and loved Mary to leave memories and upload photos to her memorial page as a tribute to her life. Her spirit, creativity, and love will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched.
